Situation
I joined Triumph Financial as a Lead UX Researcher supporting a team of 6 direct reports. The team had never had formal UX research mentorship before and had skill gaps across the team. These skill gaps included gaps in research method fluency, quality control and an overarching lack of research maturity across the business.
Task
I needed to empower this team to effectively support 5 different lines of business with incrementally improving research practice. My goal was to also have my reports shine over me as my team were the primary individual contributors within each line of business and not myself.
Action
I used Miro to create a learning workshop framework called “Research Jam” for introducing UX Research process, information, and best practice. This was a collaborative process which included instruction, case studies, and group activities.
Solution
Once introduced, I had the team vote on topics for future Research Jam topics. Each topic was run by team members randomly paired in sets of two. Each pair then created future Jams and ran them with the greater team with each member of the team fostering opportunity to grow, lead, and share their skills across the business. Research Jam took place on a bi-weekly basis.
